Creative Smartphone Field Shoot at Historic Union Station
Learn to use the camera that’s always with you and go beyond taking a simple snapshot to creating a photograph that’s an artistic expression unique to your vision. Join me with your smartphone and capture the beauty of historic Union Station and its surroundings all decked out in colorful holiday decorations.
This is a fabulous venue to capture images of people and architecture in a bustling urban environment. It provides opportunities for images of the iconic columns, chiseled inscriptions and Union Station’s neoclassical facade.
Union Station harkens from 1903 and was designed by Daniel H. Burnham, the principal architect of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The station is designed in the Beaux-Arts style after the Baths of Caraculla and Diocletian and the triumphal Arch of Rome.
We’ll start with the basics of learning to use a smartphone camera and review the settings for optimal image capture to pro tips and techniques of exposure, composition and focus that produce the best results.
TThe class will start with basic instruction on the operation of the native mobile phone’s camera. We’ll then cover some of the more advanced features of setting focus and exposure independently.
We’ll explore how to turn the mobile camera’s limitations such as one lens, fixed aperture, no zoom and a small sensor to advantages using creative techniques of focus, exposure and composition.
You’ll create pictures on an easily paced photo walk with guided instruction coupled with gentle critique and suggestions to make your pictures the best they can be. Later, after a bit of time dedicated to editing for the best results (using the native camera editing tools) we’ll share with each other our creative vision the photos created earlier in the day.
Note - This class varies from the Getting Started in SmartPhone Photography class in that we will not be working with any apps, only the native camera capture and editing tools. In the Getting Started class, we’ll cover the basics of your native phone capture capabilities but also explore how we can creatively edit our photos with various apps. Additionally, this is more of a shooting class with a smaller amount of time set aside to cover the capture/editing tools and critique. The Getting Started class goes into greater detail on the capture and editing aspects and we spend less time actually shooting.
This class is appropriate for all mobile phone cameras. No additional apps needed. There are no prerequisites, either class is fine for the beginner or the long-time user just wanting to get more creative in their compositions or their editing.
Participants will need to bring a fully charged smartphone. A charger is a good idea too as photos quickly drain the batteries.
Class limit: 10
