Capital Photography Center Workshop
Composition in Nature at Lake Roland Park
The composition of a photograph is the single most important element a photographer uses to convey an artistic statement. What’s included, excluded and the arrangement of elements within the frame is all part of composition.
In this field shoot class, you will learn techniques to improve a photograph’s composition in Baltimore’s Lake Roland Park. We’ll have panoramic views of a stone dam built early in the 1860’s and its reservoir. On the reservoir we should see people enjoying water-sports, fishing, and beautiful nature scenes along the banks.
In addition to the waterfront views, we’ll take a short walk along a boardwalk through woodlands to the Falls Road Light Rail Station. You’ll photograph dappled light through the woodland, closeup of flowers and vegetation. You can also photograph the architectural elements of the station and the comings and goings of the trains.
Topics include:
- Telling a story with strong composition
- Eliminating distracting elements
- Layering elements within the frame
- Choosing format of horizontal vs vertical
- Accentuate your style with stronger composition
Although any camera will do, for best results we recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual exposure controls. Lenses in the range of 18-200mm will work well.
Optional equipment:
- Tripod with remote trigger (or camera self-timer). If not tripod you'll work with high ISOs during the twilight time.
- Circular Polarizer filter
- Neutral Density filter(s)
COVID Safety Practices: Please bring a mask and wear it indoors, and outdoors anytime we are gathered close together or when the instructor is working with you. When we are spread out outdoors you can remove your mask if you’d like.
